Silver Orange Review: Please Do Not Interact With Regional
A bureaucracy game from a nanopore company, starring an appliance inspector with 34 years on the job and a director nobody may look at. It contains no molecules.
Silver Orange is a free browser game from Molecular Reality Corporation, a small company whose other games are about nanopores. This one is about lint, beans, soup and paperwork. Its own code describes it as a "surreal 80s-arcade browser game," and the page lays scanlines over a pixelated canvas 480 pixels wide and 360 tall, crowded with small procedurally drawn creatures that the game calls entities: stacks of two or three colored rectangles with eyes and an accessory.
The heads-up display counts "Lint: 0 fibers," "Beans: 0," "Soup ×1" and "Silver Oranges: 0," with a separate meter reading "Compliance: 50%." The score is the title. Silver Oranges equal lint plus beans, multiplied by soup. Six buttons run along the bottom, labeled INSPECT LINT, STIR SOUP, ???, CHAT, NEW PAN and GIVE BEAN. INSPECT LINT gets wider as the score rises. STIR SOUP jumps to a random spot on the screen whenever the mouse pointer touches it, which makes stirring the soup the hardest skill in the game. NEW PAN resets everything to zero.
The inspector
CHAT opens a conversation with TAB-42, "an appliance compliance inspector assigned to this area." His written brief says he has "been doing this job for 34 years" and is "extremely concerned about lint accumulation levels, soup viscosity standards, and proper bean distribution protocols." He cites "specific but fictitious regulation codes (e.g. 'per Lint Circular 47-C, subsection 12')," and he "never acknowledges that anything about your job or this situation is unusual." The brief also tells him: "You are never whimsical, ironic, or self-aware." He is played by a small open-weights language model, Meta's Llama 3.1 8B Instruct, which gets 256 tokens per reply and the instruction "Respond in 1-2 sentences." The chat box's placeholder text reads "File a report..."
There are twelve forms to file. They include Lint Declaration 47-C, Bean Transfer Authorization 88-B, a Bread Bowl Incident Report with a field for "Witnesses:" and an Unscheduled Trembling Report that asks for the "Duration of Trembling (seconds):". The Thursday Protocol Acknowledgment asks one question, "I acknowledge it is Thursday: [YES/NO]", and then for a signature.
This review was written on a Thursday, and the game knows. On a real Thursday it checks the calendar, and once a minute there is a one-in-ten chance that the inspector reports in with lines such as "It is still Thursday. This has been verified."
Regional
The best event in the game is called VISITATION. A banner announces "REGIONAL IS PASSING THROUGH. Remain stationary. Do not make eye contact. This is standard." A large entity labeled REGIONAL DIRECTOR, glowing gold, drifts across the screen, left to right, and every other entity tilts toward it. Clicking on the canvas while it passes produces one response: "Please do not interact with Regional." When it has gone, the banner reads "Regional has departed. Resume normal operations."
Regional is rare. Of the cataclysms the game rolls for, VISITATION has the lowest odds, a one-in-20,000 chance on each frame once the shared cooldown has expired, and after a visit nothing else can start for ten minutes. The others come round more often, some only after the pile has grown. BEAN FLOOD needs 50 beans and SILENCE OF THE BEANS needs 100, while PAPERWORK AVALANCHE ("File immediately. Do not sort.") waits for 2,000 Silver Oranges. INSPECTION DAY orders, "Do not attempt to file retroactively." CARPET ROTATION announces that "Orientation is now... adjusted." TEMPORARY PERMANENT RESTRUCTURING ends with "Designations have been restored. Permanently. For now." I waited for Regional for most of an evening.
Committees and eras
Entities that drift within 60 pixels of each other in groups of three or more form committees. The inspector announces each one ("A new committee has formed") under a name drawn from a list of fifteen, among them the "Committee to Review Committee Formation Procedures," the "Commission on Unexplained Trembling," the "Subcommittee on Recumbent Sock Placement" and the "Board of Concerns (Standing)." When a committee falls below three members, it is "dissolved due to insufficient membership."
Eight eras follow one another as Silver Oranges accumulate, starting with The Early Filing Period. At 500 comes The Great Bean Consolidation. The Lint Reckoning arrives at 25,000 with the notice "All lint disclosures from the previous three eras are now under review. This is not retroactive." The Thursday Reformation, at 200,000, declares that "every day contains trace elements of Thursday." At 500,000 comes The Eternal Filing Period: "There is no further era advancement. Filing is now continuous and without end. Congratulations."
Backwards Day
Twenty smaller surprises fill the gaps. BACKWARDS DAY lasts 25 seconds, reverses every entity's name and is announced by the inspector in reversed letters; read forwards, the announcement says "Retrospective reflection. Baurestatic cycloperation." ENTITY MIRROR MODE reports "Left is now... also left." A LINT CENSUS promises that "Results will be published in 6-8 weeks."
Molecules
Silver Orange contains no molecules. The nearest it comes to chemistry is soup viscosity, which is regulated.
The verdictVery tasty
Silver Orange is a game about waiting for a man who must not be looked at, and the waiting is well furnished. TAB-42 holds the room together, the forms reward reading, and the eras escalate in exactly the tone of a memo that has been forwarded too many times. The only flaw is the director's schedule.
