Magic User is one of the nine character classes of Epic Quest Bio, the role-playing game through which Molecular Reality Corporation organizes its work. Until the class posters of June 2026 it was called Spellbinder. Under that name the founder's essay of 2025 gave it the company's outreach: SpellBinders "practice the ancient human magic of making other humans pay attention".[1] No company text defines the class under its new name. A Player Scientist may take it as a major or a minor class.

Origins

The essay, "How to Play Epic Quest Bio", was the landing text of epicquest.bio in 2025 and introduced the eight original classes with a paragraph each. Its SpellBinder exists because "Someone has to make people actually care about this stuff." The paragraph suggests that such a player might make music or memes, and says: "You will take our extremely nerdy mission and make normal humans understand why it matters. You're equal parts educator, propagandist, and showman." It ends: "Every quest needs someone who can charm the locals into helping instead of throwing rocks."[1]

In the company's database the class is the fifth of the eight original classes, spelled Spellbinder, with the color 180, 87, 242 in RGB, a purple, and the placeholder description "The Spellbinder class is vital to the mission. [Edit this description in the Command Deck]". Its flat icon is a purple lens holding gold rings.[2] A design draft of May 2025 listed fourteen classes and no Spellbinder. It gave science communication and outreach to a Bard, "The Weaver of Wonder, the Herald of Breakthroughs, The Muse of Molecularity", whose mentor was to be Seraphina "SparkleSong" Vocalius.[2] The help file of the member software also has a Bard, for "storytelling/marketing", and no Spellbinder.[3] The posters of June 2026 have neither name.

Name

In ordinary English a spellbinder is a speaker who holds an audience spellbound. In the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, which the founder's essay names as the model for the classes, the word was a rank: the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook of 1978 gives "Spellbinder" as the title of an illusionist of the ninth level.[4] The magic-user, with a hyphen, was one of the game's three classes in 1974, beside the fighting-man and the cleric,[5] and the second edition of 1989 filed it under "wizard".[6]

The header of the member software identifies each poster by its file name. For this class the name is Magic_User, so the chat question that its poster starts reads "Magic_User question:", the only one of the nine prefixes that differs from the name on the poster.[2]

Poster

The poster, 3,796 by 3,736 pixels, imitates the box of an old game or a paperback, with dark bands down both sides. Orange letters outlined in yellow spell "Magic User" across the top. Below them a red creature, shaped like a mushroom or a cell, holds two glowing cyan orbs beside its head and a pale emblem on its chest, and its arms end in bursts of green sparks. It floats over an orange plain of bubbling cells.[2]

Magic in company copy

The class has no quests of its own. Magic appears elsewhere in the company's material as a word for technology. The page of its mascot, Keltar, says that he is "channeled to your screens through the magnificent algorithmic magic of matrix multiplication".[7] In The Disclosure Crawl, the class that handles electronics is the Signal Sorcerer, an "Electronics & data wizard".[8] The outreach that the essay assigned to SpellBinders is done in practice by Keltar, whose Field Guide describes the division of labor: "The humans do the science. I do the welcome."[9]
