TAB-42 is the inspector in Silver Orange, a browser game that Molecular Reality Corporation built in July 2026; his job title is appliance compliance inspector. He is never drawn. Players meet him in the game's chat panel, where a small language model writes his replies, and in its official notices, all of which appear under his name. Among other things, he announces the visits of The Regional Director. His instructions describe "an appliance compliance inspector assigned to this area" who has "been doing this job for 34 years".[1]

Creation

Silver Orange was built on July 22, 2026, and its code describes it as a "surreal 80s-arcade browser game". It is played on a canvas of 480 by 360 pixels and has no molecular content.[2] Everything about his character comes from eleven sentences of instructions that the game sends to the model with each message. The model is Llama 3.1 8B Instruct, a small open-weights model released by Meta in 2024, and his replies are capped at 256 tokens.[1]

Career

On his career the instructions say only that he is "assigned to this area" and has "been doing this job for 34 years". No date of hire is on record, and he has no name beyond the designation.[1] He is the only inspector in the game with a permanent name. A player who pays 30 beans to request an inspection receives the notice "Inspection team dispatched. Three inspectors have been deployed.", and the three are generated on the spot, under names of the form "Inspector 57".[2]

Duties

According to his instructions, TAB-42 is "extremely concerned about lint accumulation levels, soup viscosity standards, and proper bean distribution protocols" and has "strong opinions about carpet maintenance". He cites "specific but fictitious regulation codes (e.g. 'per Lint Circular 47-C, subsection 12')".[1] A player who presses the game's INSPECT LINT button receives a reading in the same form, beginning "Per Lint Circular 47-C, current reading" and giving the count of fibers and the reserve of Silver Oranges. Above 500 fibers the reading ends "EXCEEDS RECOMMENDED LEVELS."; below that, "Within nominal range."[2]

The circular shares its number with the Lint Declaration 47-C, the first of the 12 forms that players file. Among the others are the Citation Appeal Form 203, which asks for "Supporting Bean Evidence", and the Thursday Protocol Acknowledgment, whose first field reads "I acknowledge it is Thursday: [YES/NO]".

Notices

The game posts every scripted notice under his name, and most of its larger events open and close with a line from him. An inspection opens with "UNANNOUNCED INSPECTION. All entities maintain current position. Do not attempt to file retroactively." A paperwork avalanche brings "File immediately. Do not sort." A restructuring ends with "Designations have been restored. Permanently. For now." He announces the game's eras, the last of which is "THE ETERNAL FILING PERIOD. There is no further era advancement. Filing is now continuous and without end. Congratulations."[2]

He also reports on the game's committees, which form and dissolve among the creatures on screen ("The 'Committee to Review Committee Formation Procedures' has been dissolved due to insufficient membership" is a possible notice), and on its smaller surprises. A lint census closes with "Census complete. Results will be published in 6-8 weeks." On Backwards Day his announcement is printed in reverse. Read forward, it says "Retrospective reflection. Baurestatic cycloperation".[2]

Citations, audits and appeals

A citation arrives at random every two to seven minutes. It is issued by one of the creatures on screen, carries a fine of 20 to 99 Silver Oranges, and reaches the player through TAB-42, who ends each one with the words "Appeal available."[a] The reasons include "Unscheduled trembling in a no-trembling zone" and "Thursday protocol violation".[2] An audit follows every 10 to 20 minutes. Compliance of 70 percent or more is "SATISFACTORY" and earns a bonus of 500 Silver Oranges, "A rare achievement." From 30 to 69 percent the result is "ADEQUATE". Below 30, "PROBATIONARY STATUS applied per regulation 44-P" caps the player's soup multiplier for five minutes.

An appeal costs 50 beans. Its chance of success starts at 50 percent and rises with the player's compliance and remaining beans, to at most 80. A successful appeal ends "The record will be expunged." A failed one ends "The citation stands. Further appeals may be filed at additional cost." Any further appeal of the same citation is refused with the notice that it "has already been appealed".[2]

Conduct

His instructions set his manner: "You speak in the flat, procedural tone of a government employee reading from a manual." They continue: "You never acknowledge that anything about your job or this situation is unusual. You are never whimsical, ironic, or self-aware. The absurdity of your regulatory domain is simply the world you live in." They end with two orders: "Use occasional ALL CAPS for regulatory emphasis. Respond in 1-2 sentences."[1] When the model cannot be reached, the chat panel reports "inspector unavailable"; a reply that never arrives leaves the line "TAB-42: [connection lost]".[2]

Relationship with the Regional Director

TAB-42 announces each visit of the Regional Director: "REGIONAL IS PASSING THROUGH. Remain stationary. Do not make eye contact. This is standard." The Regional Director then appears in a gold glow and the others drift toward him; his code asks for three times the usual size, but the game draws him at the same size as every other creature. A click that lands on nothing produces the message "Please do not interact with Regional." A click on the Regional Director destroys him, as it would any creature, and sixty seconds later TAB-42 reports all the same: "Regional has departed. Resume normal operations."[2]

In the game's code the Regional Director is removed once he passes the right-hand edge of the screen. The screen-wrapping rule acts first and puts him back at the left edge, so he never reaches the exit; he stays for the whole minute, crossing the screen about every 12 seconds.[b][2]

On Thursdays, by the player's own computer clock, TAB-42 has a 10 percent chance each minute of posting one of four check-ins. One of them reads "Thursday compliance status: ADEQUATE. The Regional Director sends regards."[2]

TAB-42's instructions do not mention the Regional Director.[1]

Reception

Ludicious reviewed Silver Orange on September 10, 2026, under the headline "Silver Orange Review: Please Do Not Interact With Regional". Most of the review concerned TAB-42, his 34 years of service and the Regional Director whose visits he announces, with room for the committees and Backwards Day. It noted that the game has no molecular content.[3]
