List of unusual units used at Molecular Reality

Measures in the writing, software and games of a nanopore company
This is a list of units and measures that appear in the writing, software and games of Molecular Reality Corporation. They are unusual for one of three reasons: the quantity is extreme, as in the zeptoliter; the measure is borrowed from somewhere that has nothing to do with a laboratory, as in the Kardashev level; or the unit exists only inside the company's own games. Ordinary units used at ordinary values, such as the volt and the siemens, are left out. Each entry says what the thing is before it says where the company used it.
Extreme scales
- Picoampere (pA)
- One trillionth of an ampere, or 6.2 million elementary charges a second. It is the scale of the current through a single ion channel, and of the changes in current that mark a molecule in a pore.
- Zeptoliter (zL)
- One sextillionth of a liter, the volume of a cube 10 nm on a side, which holds about 33,000 molecules of water. The founder headed a message to members of EQBio-OS "Zeptoliter is My Favorite Unit of Measurement" on March 29, 2026, in praise of a paper on two pores joined by a droplet of about 63 zL.[1]
- Ions per nanosecond
- The rate at which charge carriers cross a pore. For the model current of the company's live stream it is given as 19 billion ions a second. A current of 3.1 nA is 19.4 ions in each nanosecond. The figure is the prediction of a model for a pore of a given size, and not a reading from a particular pore.[2]
- Multiples of kBT ln 2
- The least heat that erasing one bit must release, according to Landauer's principle, and 2.87 zJ at 300 K. A pore at 3.1 nA and 200 mV that spends 10 µs on a decision dissipates 6.2 fJ, about 2.2 million of these units.[3]
- Hydrogen atom
- A ruler of about 100 pm, used by the founder for a difference of 31 pm in the radii of two particles, which a multipass Coulter counter of 2015 could tell apart. He noted that the distance is "smaller than a single hydrogen atom".[4] The radius of the atom in its ground state, the Bohr radius, is 52.9 pm.
Borrowed measures
- Gnat's whisper
- A company video about the older MR1 Molecular Streaming Device calls signals of picoampere size "at the scale of a gnat's whisper" in its caption, and describes the board that reads them as a "5-kingdom circuit board". The phrase has no stated value.[5]
- Kardashev level
- A rank of a civilization by the power it commands, after the astronomer Nikolai Kardashev, who proposed three types in 1964 (see Kardashev scale). Company copy of February 2026 describes the volunteer network as "a virtual machine that we could not build monolithically at our Kardashev level".[6]
- Subjective human year equivalent
- A year as it would feel to a human. The instructions for Keltar in one version have him travel "for quadrillions of subjective human year equivalents" through the ruliad. A single quadrillion years is about 72,000 times the age of the universe.[3]
- AEST (Accelerationist-Equivalent-Subjective-Time)
- A calendar of the founder's own, whose name expands to "Accelerationist-Equivalent-Subjective-Time". In a post of March 2026 he dated the company's first slide deck to "several thousand years ago in AEST, i.e., around 2015".[7] If "several" means three to five thousand, each of the eleven calendar years since then holds 270 to 450 years of AEST.
Units of the company's games
- Experience point (XP)
- The score of Epic Quest Bio. A quest to report a bug on the website pays 10 XP, a quiz answer in one dungeon about 0.05, and the largest quest, to sequence DNA with a solid-state nanopore, 9,900,000 (it is switched off). The largest award is 990,000 times the smallest bug report.[8] See Experience points (Epic Quest Bio).
- Silver Orange
- The score of the browser game Silver Orange, equal to the sum of lint and beans multiplied by the soup. Lint is counted in fibers, beans in beans, and the soup is a multiplier redrawn at random every eight or nine seconds between 1 and 998. A second display shows compliance as a percentage.[9]
- Bean
- The currency of Silver Orange: an inspection costs 30 beans and an appeal 50. See TAB-42.
- Milligram of Epic Quest Bio
- A dose. The essay that introduces the game prescribes "15 milligrams of Epic Quest Bio™ for a complete recovery" to readers who doubt the company.[10] No concentration is given.
- Reason
- A numbered argument for building utility-scale molecular sensing. A post of April 29, 2026, titled "Nobody Dies", consists of a link to a video and the line "reason #89224947297 why we must build utility-scale molecular sensing".[11] If the reasons are numbered in order, the company has about eleven for each of the eight billion or so people alive.
